In LiLiCHRO ‘s devices, the separation takes place between two immiscible liquid phases, where the separation is based on the different separation behaviour of the solutes between the two phases. One of the two phases involved in the process is the stationary phase. This liquid stationary phase is held in place during this type of chromatographic separation by the application of a strong centrifugal force on the system. The high sample load is made possible by the fact that the entire volume of the liquid stationary phase can be reached by the solutes. An additional advantage is that the issue of irreversible adsorption is taken out of the picture, meaning that full recovery of the sample is possible in liquid-liquid chromatographic separation.
